Matthew Butler, LISW-S, LICDC-CS

Matt Butler has a Bachelor’s Degree (with a double major in Psychology and Sociology) from Kent State University, and a Master of Science in Social Administration (Adult Mental Health) from Case Western Reserve University. He is a Licensed Independent Social Worker with Supervisory Endorsement (LISW-S) and Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor with Clinical Supervisor Endorsement (LICDC-CS) in the state of Ohio.

He has worked in social work and social work-adjacent positions with a large variety of populations and practice settings for more than two decades, including child welfare, residential treatment, prison-based counseling, hospice social work, school-based counseling, substance use disorder counseling, interventions related to sudden and traumatic loss, and counseling with children, adults, families, couples, and older adults. His primary practice interests include suicide postvention and prevention, self-care and the instillation of hope, and the reduction of stigma regarding behavioral health conditions.

He has taught for eight years at the graduate level for Case Western Reserve University, in addition to Youngstown State University, and at the undergraduate level for Kent State University. He has also supervised dozens of students from social work and human services programs, spent ten years doing clinical supervision work at a community nonprofit behavioral health agency, and teaches continuing education workshops on many topics. In addition, he runs a counseling private practice. Matt is the Program Director for the Bachelor of Social Work Program at Kent State University.
